“What does it mean to know a language? For the layman, the linguist or the teacher the answer is obvious-to speak it. An emphasis on oral language dominates recent linguistic theory and has occasionally been criticized. According to F. Household:
“Many linguists.. imply by their total silence that writing and written materials are not concern to the linguist, that his description of a language complete if it correctly accounts for every possible spoken utterance (p.250).
일반인이나, 언어학자나 영어선생님의 언어 습득은 당연이 “말하기”라고 할 것이지만 모든 음절을 따라 한다고 해서 언어를 완벽히 습득했다고 볼 수는 없다.
많은 언어학자들은 언어를 습득하는 과정을 듣기-말하기 학설 (the audio-lingual theory)을 통해서 설명하는데 완벽한 언어습득을 위해 listening-speaking-reading-writing (듣기-말하기-읽기-쓰기)의 4단계를 거쳐야 한다고 주장하며 writing이 언어습득의 최고단계로 보고 있음.
“Writing is increasingly becoming important in the EFL classroom and being recognized not only for its sake but the valuable practice it affords in encoding the language. While direct audio-lingual methods stress oral practice, recent evidence suggests that writing may have certain advantages over talk as a form of encoding.”
글쓰기는 영어를 외국어로 배우는 학생에는 더욱 중요해지고 있다. 글쓰기 자체뿐만 아니라 글쓰기를 계속하면 언어를 코드화(encoding, 뇌에 입력하기 위해, 즉 언어를 습득하기 위해)에 중요하다. 듣기를 통한 언어 습득은 말하기에 도움을 주지만 최근 연구에 따르면 글쓰기 자체가 언어를 코드화하기 위해 유리한 점을 시사하고 있다.
“One study asserts that combination of reading and writing (in lieu of speaking) at the early stages of adult language learning may increase the likelihood of native-like pronunciation. This suggests that best adult language learning strategies may differ from those of children and specifically, that writing may serve an important need in adult language learning”.
성인의 언어습득방법은 아동과 다르기 때문에 외국어를 배울 때 처음부터 (말하기 대신) 읽기와 쓰기를 배우면 발음이 좋아질 수 있는 점을 연구에서 밝히고 성인의 외국어 습득에서 쓰기가 중요할 수 있다는 점 강조.
